Swim Meet 101

Tell me more about swim meets...

We plan to attend one swim meet per month from Oct - Feb and also championship meets in March.  Typically, meets we attend are within 2 hrs from Williamsport. Meets typically charge $10 for each event a swimmer enters and fees are non-refundable once the registration date has passed.

  • What are they?
    • We are part of the Middle Atlantic Region of USA swimming and compete in sanctioned meets. We plan to enter 1 meet per month and we don't host meets so we need to travel to meets hosted by other teams. We look for meets within 2hr 15 minutes from Williamsport. Meets are hosted and run by USA rules and certified officials and allow swimmers to test their progress through official times for events and competition with other swimmers of similar age. There are 3 types of meets we attend: Mini meets are for 8 and unders; Developmental meets are for 12 and unders; and Regular meets are for 9-18yr olds. Developmental meets are typically one day meets for 12 and unders and last 4-5 hours. Mini and regular meets are held over a weekend with multiple days, different events each day.
  • Is there a schedule?
    • Our meet schedule for Fall will be ready by Sept 1st and posted on our website with opportunity to sign up, choose events and information about when the registration for the meet closes.
  • How do I know if my child is ready to be in a meet?
    • Coaches can talk with parents to help them determine if their swimmer is ready to enter a meet and what events would be good for that swimmer.
  • Do we have to attend?
    • No. There is no requirement to swim meets, but swimmers are encouraged to participate.
  • What does a meet day look like?
    • A regular swim meet is divided into age groups, 9-12yr olds and 13-18 yr olds, and are broken into "Sessions". One group swims in the morning and the other in the afternoon. If there is a mini meet (8 and unders) this is usually in the early afternoon between the morning and afternoon sessions. Sessions usually last 2-3 hrs. Developmental meets are typically one day and run 4-5 hours.
    • Before each session, there is a designated warm up time for swimmers. Teams are assigned a time and lane(s) for warm up. Swimmers arrive at the pool with enough time to get ready in the locker room and to be on deck with the coach prior to warm up time. Following their last event of the session, swimmers can return to their parents or stay with the team until all of the team has completed their events for the session and then return to parents. Many parents get hotel rooms to make it easier, especially if swimming multiple days. Swimmers do not need to swim multiple sessions or multiple days. Meet entry and choices are optional.
